The name Atimonan was coined after the name of its founder, Simeona Mangaba, known to her town mates as Ate Monang, a woman with unquestionable leadership quality.

During those days, everyone in the community considered Ate Monang as their adopted parent, leader and protector. Ate Monang was the elder sister of Francisco Mangaba, the first chieftain of the town.

She founded the town on February 4, 1608.
